Making Peeps Smores - Andrea Meyers

May 17, 2020 marked 67 days of COVID lockdown and we were getting a little stir crazy. It was time for something a little fun and silly, and we decide to experiment with making Peeps smores over a backpack campfire stove on our patio table. Michael went crazy buying cheap leftover Easter candy and we ended up with an impressive and slightly frightening stash of marshmallow peeps and different types of chocolate bars. Then the guys went to town and got a sugar high testing all the flavors and combinations with plain honey graham crackers. I skipped the graham crackers because we didn't have any gluten free on hand, and instead experimented with eating the Peeps and chocolate straight up, no crackers or cookies. That was very sticky.

Here's what we had to work with:

    Flavors of Peeps
    Plain yellow, blue, and purple
    Party Cake
    Fruit Punch
    Blue Raspberry

    Flavors of chocolate
Hershey Miniatures (Mr. Goodbar, Krackel, Hershey's Special Dark, Hershey's milk chocolate)
    Hershey's Gold Peanuts and Pretzels
Reese's White Chocolate Peanut Butter Egg
    Reese's mini cups

Graham crackers are scored into four rectangles, and in keeping with tradition, we usually break them in half for smores. This time we broke them into fourths because we anticipated the Peeps being uber sweet and wanted smaller portions, but we eventually switched over to the half crackers. The sugar on the Peeps turned molten hot, so be very careful when putting them in your mouth.

Now for the judges' votes. The blue raspberry Peeps were quite popular with just about every kind of chocolate, but the clear chocolate winner was the Hershey's Gold Peanuts and Pretzels bars. The guys thought that was the best with any of the Peeps. Feedback on the Fruit Punch Peeps is that they taste like Koolaid, and the Party Cake Peeps have a distinctly vanilla flavor.

We had loads of fun and Michael shot video of the experience. There's lot of laughing and funny faces from the boys.

So if you have some leftover Peeps, give the smores a try! And if you have tried Peeps smores, what's your favorite chocolate and Peep combo?
