Artichoke in our garden - Andrea Meyers

We added two artichoke plants to the garden this year, a first for us, so we had no idea if they would take to the garden or not. One of the plants has four chokes on it now, and this one is about ready to pick.

This is a great blog. I really like how you have turned it into a community where everyone reacts with each other. I also love your writing and how you have organized the blog. Creating my own wordpress blog has taught me to better appreciate great wordpress blogs like yours.

So fun! Maybe I am going to have to try growing these too.

Hi Kalyn. It's been pretty easy so far. We bought two plants and put them in the ground in May. Both plants have grown well, though only one has sprouted chokes.

How big is this plant, Andrea? Would it be too large for my container garden? I'm down to just planting foods that I know we're going to eat because this NC weather is hard to outguess. Beautiful picture, too.

Hi SharleneT. We are growing Imperial Star artichokes, which is a variety developed for home gardening. The plants can get up to 3 to 4 feet tall. It's generally considered hardy in our area (Zone 6B) and would probably handle NC weather well. Mother Earth News has an article about this variety that you might find helpful. http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic-Gardening/2001-12-01/Artichokes-for-Every-Climate.aspx
