Grow Your Own #5 Round-Up

January 5, 2008 by Andrea

Grow Your Own logo, basketHappy New Year! December was a very busy month, but we still managed to make some dishes using herbs grown in our kitchen garden. With temperatures ranging in the 20s to 40s F, it’s just too cold to grow produce outdoors! We have mint, seven different types of basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, Italian parsley, cilantro, habanero peppers, and saffron crocuses growing in the sun room. My experiment with growing grape tomatoes has not been successful thus far, but I will keep trying.

Many thanks to all the participants of Grow Your Own. This time we have made dishes using our own homegrown chickens, rosemary, cassava, and basil.

Grow Your Own #6 has already begun, so be sure to send in your entries by January 29. And now, the round-up! Click the photos to visit each post. Read more

Grow Your Own logo, seeds, 200pxIt’s that time again! Each month I look forward to all the entries that come into my mailbox. For November we have a total of 17 entries from 8 countries. We’ve made a lot of different dishes using our homegrown carrots, peppers, beets, squash, tomatoes, mint, parsley, basil, lemongrass, chilies, brussel sprouts, onions, mung bean sprouts, persimmons, chives, lettuce, squash, pumpkin, rosemary, sorrel, and even a home raised turkey! We have three desserts, four main dishes, two breads, two salads, four sides, and one beverage. I’m so impressed with the creativity displayed in this round-up!

Thanks to all of you for supporting Grow Your Own! Speaking of which, Grow Your Own #5 started yesterday. The deadline for this month’s entries is December 29, and I’ll post the round-up on January 2 (I’m giving myself a blogging holiday on New Year’s Day).

Grow Your Own #3 Round-up

Summer is finally over here in Northern Virginia. We had a few free extra weeks in October with temperatures in the 90s F/30s C, but we got more peppers and tomatoes as a bonus! Fortunately we also got three days of rain last week, which was a welcome change from the drought, though we’re still in a water shortage emergency condition with outside watering forbidden except using a three gallon can.

The more northerly regions are reaching the end of the outdoor gardening season, but folks living in areas further south have summer coming, and the lucky gardeners living in the tropics and other moderate climes are still going strong. I’m working on my winter indoor herb garden, which means I’m basically starting over. I did not have good luck with growing my herbs in containers this summer, and the only thing that has survived is my mint. Even my oregano, which is usually very hardy, was overtaken by spider mites. Hopefully my luck is about to change…

For October, Grow Your Own had 13 entries from Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, India, UK, and the U.S., and we used homegrown tomatoes, apples, raspberries, peppers, basil, bitter greens, zucchini, pumpkin, and lemon balm in our dishes. That is quite a variety! Thanks again for sharing your tasty creations with Grow Your Own. Read more

Grow Your Own logo, seeds 200pxWe have another batch of delicious entries for this month’s Grow Your Own event! I really enjoy seeing how creative we can be with the produce we grow in our own backyards. Thanks to all of you for joining in and sharing your talents with us. Thank you for also being patient with me, as I am one day late with the round-up. My Internet connection was not cooperating yesterday, but it’s much better today.

Grow Your Own now has a Flickr photo group, so if you want to include your photos, just let me know via email or in the comments and I’ll send you an invite. Anyone who participates in Grow Your Own is welcome to share photos related to growing and cooking with your own produce.

If you wanted to participate in GYO #2 but missed the deadline, you may add your September dish to the round-up, just put all the required information in the Comments below. And start thinking about Grow Your Own #3! The deadline for this month’s entries is October 30. The Northern Hemisphere is winding up the outdoor growing season while the Southern Hemisphere is gearing up for summer. And don’t forget, herbs grow indoors year round! Read more

Grow Your Own logo, seeds 200px The first Grow Your Own event has yielded some lovely dishes from all over! I couldn’t believe how fast some of you were with getting in your entries, and I started compiling the list the day after the GYO announcement. Many, many thanks to the 23 bloggers who participated, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your entries. I think there is enough interest that we could make this a monthly event! Woohoo! So check back next Wednesday for the announcement of Grow Your Own #2. (I’m busy this weekend with The Little Man’s first birthday and grandparents visiting for the ceremonial first taste—and subsequent wearing—of the birthday cake, so I’m not blogging again until then.)

If you wanted to participate but missed the deadline, you may add your dish to the round-up, just put all the required information in the Comments below.

Because this is an event that welcomes any type of dish, I organized the round-up according to the following categories:

  • Appetizers
  • Main Dishes
  • Salads & Sides
  • Dessert & Everything Else Read more
