Asparagus Quiche with Mushrooms and Shallots

If I had to choose a favorite spring vegetable, it would be a tie between asparagus and snow peas. Pencil-thin asparagus stalks look so pretty on a plate and like snow peas it tastes delicious either fresh or cooked. Though we don’t yet grow our own asparagus, the thought has crossed our minds on several occasions. We keep looking around the yard trying to decide where we want to put everything we want to grow, and we just haven’t chosen a place yet for asparagus. Things are getting tight in some spots so we have to think carefully about how plants will work together before building more beds and putting in anything else. Read more

Eggnog Gelato

One of our holiday traditions was dashed this year when we couldn’t find Turkey Hill Eggnog Ice Cream. We always buy eggnog ice cream in December and Michael was quite dejected when I came home without the prize, so I set out to help him recover from his eggnog ice cream funk. I promised him an eggnog gelato and set off to create a recipe. Read more

Tom and Jerry

Tom and Jerry

Similar to eggnog, Tom and Jerry is a long-standing Christmas Day tradition for Michael’s family, although you can certainly enjoy them anytime during the holiday season. Egg yolks and whites are whipped until they are stiff and mixed with spices, sugar, and rum, and then the batter is poured into mugs along with more rum, whiskey, and hot water. The family recipe is a slight departure from the traditional, with the addition of allspice, cinnamon, and ground cloves. Michael’s dad is in charge of making these for everyone, and he does an excellent job.

The recipe makes about 8 servings.

RAW EGG WARNING: You should take care to use the freshest available eggs and make sure that they are stored properly.

Classic Spaghetti Carbonara

I’m certainly not the first food blogger to reference Marcella Hazan, and I think I can safely predict that I will not be the last. She is considered one of the foremost authorities on Italian cuisine, and her book Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking is one that I constantly turn to when cooking Italian dishes. The book was originally published over thirty years ago as two separate volumes, The Classic Italian Cook Book and More Classic Italian Cooking, and the combined volume has been revised, updated, and expanded. Of her first book, British food writer Roy Andries de Groot wrote, “Marcella’s book is the most authentic guide to Italian food ever written in the U.S.” No small compliment, to be sure.

According to Essentials, carbonara sauce has it’s roots in Rome during the last days of World War II when American soldiers brought eggs and bacon to local families to make into a pasta sauce. Pancetta is the preferred meat in this dish, Read more

Crustless Quiche

Crustless Quiche

This crustless quiche recipe from Aunt Joey is tasty and easy, and a great way to use leftover ham. There are plenty of variations and our favorite is with Sauteed Spinach. Making this gluten-free is easy since there is no crust, just make sure your cottage cheese and ham are gluten-free.

The recipe is for a 9-inch pie plate. If you use a quiche pan, increase the ingredients by half.
